Maura's Game by Martina Cole

This is the first time I am reading a book by Martina Cole.

Maura Ryan was the queen of the criminal underworld when she pulled off the most audacious gold bullion robbery of all time. Since then she’s retired from a life of crime to be with the only man she’s ever loved. But enemies from her past are closing in and they’re about to learn that they should never cross Maura Ryan. The dangerous lady is back and she’s as lethal as ever…

From this book, I learnt that if you had ever killed or did someone wrong, people remembered how you treated them. They can appear to be nice to you and seem to have forgotten about the misdeed. But behind the niceties, there is always an urge for revenge.  Most people do not forgive easily. After the Ryans family killed Tommy Rifkind’s son for the crimes he did, Tommy Rifkind appeared to have let go of his son’s death. He even went into a relationship with Maura Ryan years later. But there is more to his thoughts.

I like the way the book is split into 2 sections. Before the start of each section, there is a quote for it.
“Behind every great fortune is a crime” – Honore de Balzac, 1799-1850
“Be not deceived ; God is not mocked : for Whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap .” – Galatians, 6, vii

Maura never understand why Joe, who was once their friend, betrayed them. It was only revealed in the end that the Ryans killed his cousin. This cousin is a person whom he has never acknowledged. People do not know of their relationship.
“I never advertised the fact. He wa a wastrel, a gambler – I’d have had people after me for his debts. But he was the son of my mother’s favorite sister, the only one on that side of the family to reach England during the war. The rest of them died in Lodz. On my mother’s deathbed, I promised I would always look out for my Cousin Sammy, and when he died…. ”

Therefore, one must understand people have family (roots). Doing somebody a bad deed, may incur other of his other family member’s wrath.

  2. Almost all of the things you articulate is supprisingly accurate and that makes me wonder the reason why I hadn’t looked at this with this light before. Your article truly did turn the light on for me personally as far as this topic goes. However there is actually one point I am not necessarily too comfortable with so while I try to reconcile that with the main theme of your position, let me see just what all the rest of the readers have to say.Nicely done.
