Office Politicking

~ You can get a lot more done with a kind word and a gun than with a kind word alone. ~ – AL CAPONE

I come across the book “The Mafia Manager” , I am still in the process of reading it.  It’s very genuine and the author is unique. The author is called “V”… hahha what a name.

As a matter of tactics, there is one overall guide, and you should carry it up with you when you’ve gone beyond politicking at groundling level to judging it from on high.

To survive, be patient – watch, listen, and say little; to win, be patient – survive, plan, and then strike swiftly. You must be sure to correct or quash any rumor or innuendo that attaches itself to you.

This part, I think I didn’t really do well. Sometimes, people bully me, give me all sort of names, and I still keep quiet. This let them become more arrogant and thus it leads to more bullying.

To put participation in office politics in terms of survival may at first seem extreme to you. It shouldn’t. There is always at least one friendly office mate out there looking to do you in – always, whether you think so or not, and you must know about him/her to defend yourself.

You learn about him through the grapevine, and you take heed, then and do unto him as he would do unto you, and you do it before he makes his move.

But in the meantime, be a friend to every man, woman or mailroom boy in every office clique that exists, joining none. Make no long-term, close friendships with any colleague, but be cordial to all. Don’t dress in a way markedly different from your coworkers, don’t act in an offbeat way, even occasionally, and don’t tell stories about the wild and crazy personal life you lead after work hours. In other words, don’t stand out; fit in.

Tolerate, survive, lie low; the fall of senile emperors is always just around the corner, and during and after that fall a thousand opportunities wait to be seized. The hunter’s surest weapon is patience.

People problems sometimes must dealt with harshly. The lesson in this is for others as much as it is for the errant employee. When you make an example of someone, make sure that everyone knows what the lesson is. Punish one, teach a hundred.
