I will say reading 3 Balzac books in a row is quite a difficult and disturbing thing. This is because of the tragic way the story usually ends. This is the first time I read a book half way (till the part that Madame Cibot is plotting to steal those art collections from Pons, while he is very sick) , that I decided to give up the book.
I already read a synopsis of the book, and because Balzac’s writings are so descriptive and tragic plot that I do not wish to continue any more of his books. I feel really sad that Cousin Pons, being a shy man can be so easily misunderstood and given a bad name by his relatives. However when everyone knows that he has a prized art collection in his hand, feelings change and it seems that everyone is determined to get their hands on his collection.
Balzac’s writings introduce a wicked world, and a very tragic one. So far, it seems like there is no happy ending to his stories, for the three Balzac books that I read. The author must have live a very sad life himself.
